One of the most common things that I saw here at medium and almost on any social media website is “Follow for follow” posts/comments.
Follow for follow is basically “Follow me, I follow you”, now for some, this may be a great thing, but I think that it’s not worth it and the reasons are the following:
My experience with follow for follow method
In 2019, I have made a new YouTube channel, and I wanted the channel to grow fast, so I decided to use the “Follow for follow” method or “Sub for sub”, using this method I gained about 200 subscribers, in terms of subscribes it was not a bad thing, but in terms of views, no one was watching (except some friends), and I ended up closing the channel.
Follow-Unfollow
Some peoples cheat, they follow you, they wait a couple of days, and then they unfollow you, I don’t know exactly why, but you won’t gonna like that if your purpose is getting more followers.
Following, but not taking a look at the content
This is what happened with my YouTube channel, I have 200 subscribers, but no one watching my videos except my friends, and this is very common, the only thing that those peoples care about are followers, they don’t care about your content, they don’t even take a look, just following you, watching few videos, and then forget about you.
What should you do instead?
We need to know what Medium is made for
I understand that people want to get to the partner program to earn money, but this is not what medium is made for, medium is a social network where peoples share their ideas, partner program is made as a way to support hard-working writers to encourage and motivate them to keep blogging and to be creative, there is no such thing as “free money”, to earn money, you need to work hard.
Boost your audience: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
If you want to boost your audience, you can optimize your blog posts to be ranked high in search engines, this is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO, you can do that by editing the title and description, you need to include keywords that most peoples search about (it should be related to your content), you can find those keywords using some tools available online, and make a pretty title, just don’t do clickbait titles as this will reduce your credibility.
Boost your audience: Share your articles
This is another way of boosting your audience, which is sharing your articles, this is self-explanatory, just share it.
Patience
Don’t expect to have 100 followers overnight, you will need to be patient, it may take months to get your first 100 followers, 100 followers is the hardest part, once you pass it, everything becomes easier.
